God's Own Mouse: The Story of ''Simon the Star Lighter''

Hi Everyone,

I thought you'd like to hear the story I told my family while we were making our Thanksgiving dinner. The story is about a little boy named Simon. Simon lived a long time ago, way back before any of us were born. His Mom and Dad loved him very much, and he was a special little boy. When he was just little he got very sick. His Mom and Dad took him to the doctor to find out what was wrong. The doctor said that Simon had a very bad sickness, and it looked like Simon might go to heaven sooner than anyone wanted him to.

Simon didn't think he was ready to go to heaven yet, so he decided  to do everything he could to get better. He ate his vegetables and washed his hands and stayed out of the cold rain. At night before he went to bed, he would say his prayers. He asked God to keep him here on earth, so his parents wouldn't be sad.

Every night Simon looked up in the sky to see all the stars. He asked his father who made all the stars shine. His father told him that God makes the stars shine. Simon asked, ''Does God have helpers to help Him light all those stars?'' His Dad said that he didn't know. Simon said, ''I think he must have helpers, because there are so many stars. He must have star lighters helping Him.''

Simon loved watching the stars and thinking about the star lighters. No matter how sick he felt, he could look at the stars and know that even when everything was at its darkest, God had star lighters to make the sky bright again.

One night Simon got much sicker, and it looked like he would be going to heaven soon. He asked his Dad to turn his bed, so he could look at the stars. Simon's Mom and Dad held his hands and looked up at the stars with him. Simon told his Mom and Dad that it was time for him to go to heaven. He told them that God needed him to be one of His star lighters.

Whenever Simon's Mom and Dad got lonely and missed him, they would look at the stars and think of him running around lighting stars as fast as he could. All those twinkling stars would remind them that even though life on earth is hard and sad sometimes, someday they'd all be together again forever.

Simon's Mom and Dad were very sad after Simon went to heaven, so every evening they'd go to his room and look out his window. When the stars blinked on they knew Simon the Star Lighter was helping God send everyone on earth a message of hope for all the good things that wait for us in heaven.

You'll see me soon, but not if I see you first!

Perley
